PEJ is implementing an international assistance project in Ukraine with a hybrid team of Ukrainian and international lawyers. Its mission is to support accountability avenues and directly investigate international crimes committed since at least February 24, 2022.


PEJ's Ukraine Program is articulated around the following priorities:

  • Ensure support to victims' communities by facilitating collecting, preserving, and transmitting evidence on the crimes suffered.

  • Harvest, process, consolidate, and analyze evidence to prepare factual and legal packages and briefs supporting accountability procedures.

  • Contribute to the global effort to address the plundering of resources, starvation tactics, and food security issues associated with the conflict.

  • Facilitate and contribute to accountability options through legal submissions to appropriate accountability mechanisms in Ukraine and third-party states or international jurisdictions.

  • Contribute as relevant to strengthening the national justice system's capacity to address pillage and other crimes against property through training and support to Judges, Prosecutors, and law enforcement actors.

Duties and deliverables:

PEJ Ukraine Program is looking for an intern to support its work. Under the overall supervision and strategic guidance of the Legal and Program Director (Ukraine) and the daily coordination of the Program Coordinator, the Data Management Intern will work directly with the Data Manager and other investigators in the team (senior, lead, and junior investigators) to implement Phase II activities and achieve the goals of the project. The intern will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to the following:

  • Data collection and management assistance;

  • Duly collecting open-source information on the assigned topic and assisting with other data collection and analysis;

  • Maintaining communications with the team and engaging in their activities on request of the Project Coordinator;

  • Reporting the results and feedback in meetings;

  • Taking and filing meeting notes;

  • Providing information and analysis required for the reporting;

  • Provide reports on all evidence and data gathered, including in cooperation with partners;

  • Translation and document drafting;

  • Legal drafting and analysis.

Education:

Be enrolled in, or have completed, a master's degree in a field related to law, international relations, political sciences, human rights, investigation, OR an equivalent professional/ legal qualification OR compensatory experience.


Prior experience:

While not a pre-requisite, previous professional experience (including internships) in a legal

environment or with a human rights NGO would be an asset.


Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of international human rights and international criminal law;

  • Working fluency in English, Ukrainian, and Russian;

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational & communication skills;

  • Proven ability to handle confidential matters;

  • Effective research skills;

  • Ability to work independently and with diverse and multinational teams;

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace tools, including Google Drive, Sheets, and Docs;

  • Technological awareness & willingness to learn.
