About PEJ's Ukraine Program:
PEJ is implementing an international assistance project in Ukraine with a hybrid team of Ukrainian and international lawyers. The mission of the Ukraine program is to support accountability avenues and directly investigate international crimes committed since at least Feb. 24, 2022.
PEJ Ukraine Program is articulated around the following priorities:
Ensure support to victims' communities by facilitating the process of collecting, preserving, and transmitting evidence on the crimes suffered.
Harvest, process, consolidate, and analyze evidence to prepare factual and legal packages and briefs supporting accountability procedures.
Contribute to the global effort to address the plundering of resources, starvation tactics, and food security issues associated with the conflict.
Facilitate and contribute to accountability options through legal submissions to appropriate accountability mechanisms in Ukraine and third-party states or international jurisdictions.
Contribute as relevant to strengthening the national justice system's capacity to address pillage and other crimes against property through training and support to Judges, Prosecutors, and law enforcement actors.
Duties and Deliverables:
PEJ Ukraine Program is looking for an intern to support its work. Under the overall supervision and strategic guidance of the Legal and Program Director (Ukraine) and the daily coordination of the Program Coordinator, the OSINT Intern will work directly with the Investigators Coordinator to implement Phase II activities and achieve the project's goals. The intern will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to the following:
Conducting open-source research and preparing analyses on various issues relating to the situation in Ukraine;
Assisting the Investigators in the compilation and review of information, documentation, and evidence related to the project's subject matter;
Contributing to the preparation of analytical reports and other work products;
News monitoring and open-source investigations;
Participating in meetings related to the project and taking notes;
Participating in PEJ organizational meetings;
Assisting with other needs as requested by other team members.
Education:
Be enrolled in, or have completed, a master's degree in a field related to law, international relations, political sciences, human rights, investigation, OR an equivalent professional/ legal qualification OR compensatory experience.
Prior experience:
While not a pre-requisite, previous professional experience (including internships) in open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools and techniques would be an asset.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of international human rights & international criminal law;
Working fluency in English, Ukrainian, and Russian;
Effective research skills;
Proven ability to handle confidential matters;
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills;
Ability to work under minimal supervision while being in regular communication with colleagues and supervisors and to work under time pressure and meet tight deadlines;
Ability to work independently and with diverse and multinational teams;
Willingness to learn.
