Making a Difference

PEJ has witnessed cascading gains since its establishment in 2016. Our model of documenting abuses and working collaboratively with local partners leads to steady, sustainable progress toward protecting human rights.

In 2022 and 2023 alone, PEJ:

  • Equipped 138 partner organizations with justice-seeking tools

  • Trained and mentored 936 rights defenders in 4 countries

  • Collected and safely stored more than 7,000 pieces of evidence

  • Filed 18 cases and supported 12 others to obtain accountability for survivors

Interviews

In 2023, PEJ spoke with more than 100 survivors and witnesses of grave human rights violations in Sudan. These included torture, summary execution, and rape. Because of PEJ’s work, this evidence is being used to pursue justice.

Evidence

PEJ’s Ukraine program has collected thousands of pieces of evidence of war crimes. This includes extensive open-source intelligence (OSINT) that corroborates on-the-ground findings to help the world grasp the extent of Ukraine’s economic and human losses.

Cases

In 2023 alone, PEJ filed 18 cases and supported 12 other cases with partners. All of these cases directly target human rights abuses and aim to bring justice to survivors and lasting peace to communities.

Reports

PEJ has published over 10 in-depth analyses of human rights issues. These described agricultural pillage and environmental crimes in Ukraine, atrocities against local and tribal communities, and the relationship between corruption and rights abuses.

“Your team was the first to truly document this destruction and explain how it could support claims for compensation. [...] Because of your work, I finally feel that the losses we suf ered won’t be forgotten, and that justice is possible.”
